Additional & Supportive Therapies

While the standard of care for most brain tumors often involves surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, many patients explore additional or alternative options to personalize their treatment and improve quality of life. Below are some treatments and approaches that may be considered alongside — or in some cases instead of — traditional methods:

1. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery
A highly focused form of radiation therapy that delivers precise, high-dose beams to the tumor without an actual incision. Often used for small or hard-to-reach tumors, Gamma Knife can minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

2. Gene Therapy (GT)
Gene therapy research aims to modify or replace defective genes or introduce new ones to help the body fight cancer. While still largely experimental, GT shows promise in targeting tumor cells at the molecular level.

3. Proton Therapy
An advanced type of radiation that uses protons instead of X-rays, allowing for highly targeted treatment that can spare nearby healthy brain tissue — especially useful for pediatric patients or tumors near critical brain structures.

4. CAR T-Cell Therapy
A cutting-edge form of immunotherapy where a patient’s own immune cells are modified to recognize and attack tumor cells. While CAR T-cell therapy is more common in certain blood cancers, trials are underway to test its effectiveness in brain tumors.

5. Holistic and Integrative Therapies
Complementary approaches such as acupuncture, meditation, nutrition therapy, and gentle movement (like yoga) can help manage symptoms, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being during and after treatment.

6. Immunotherapy
Beyond CAR T-cells, other immunotherapies — including immune checkpoint inhibitors, vaccines, and oncolytic viruses — are being studied to help the immune system better identify and destroy tumor cells.

7. Seeking a Second Opinion
Brain tumors are complex, and treatment decisions can be life-changing. A second opinion from a major cancer center or specialist in neuro-oncology can provide additional perspectives, uncover clinical trial opportunities, and help patients feel more confident in their care plan.

Important Note: Some of these options are only available through clinical trials or at specialized treatment centers. Always consult with a qualified neuro-oncologist before making any treatment decisions.
